Officials of the Kenya National Union of Teachers Teso Branch escaped
arrests by a whisker on Monday afternoon after they stormed a national
school with a bid to evict students who had reported to school.
The Branch Executive Secretary General, Deogratias Owaya said
anti-riot police officers from Malaba Police led by OCS Marwa Chacha
intercepted their bus outside the gate of Kolanya Girls High School
and ordered the arrest of the officials.
” Hell broke loose when the teachers who were in company of their
officials said they will not allow their officials to be arrested and
that all of them should be nabbed instead.
The van was later given escort by two police vehicles destined for
Malaba Police station. Fearing that the arrest could have spark off
teachers’ fury, the police escorted the van to our union headquarters
in Amagoro,” he said.
Owaya said they were given a clean bill of health after the stormy
meeting that lasted about two hours. He admitted that they were acting
on information that the students at the school were undertaking
He blamed the police for provoking the teachers that prompted them to
lose their tempers, adding that the officials had left the school
after a cordial meeting with the school principal, Salome Papoi.
