Agriculture and Food Authority-Fibre Crops Directorate will fast track the opening of Mulwanda ginnery, the authority Head of marketing, Fanuel Lubanga has revealed.
Speaking in Busia on Thursday when he met the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Cooperative and Industrialization Judith Maketso and her team, Lubanga said the authority will offer capacity building and develop tender documents.
Lubanga said they will build the capacity of the cooperatives and ensure there is sustainability in the running of Mulwanda ginnery after many futile attempts.
” With the new team at the Trade department we shall have a breakthrough in the revival of the ginnery,” he said, adding that the issues that have been hindering us from progressing will be addressed, especially on areas like procurement.
He added: “This time we shall do a request for Quotations (RFQ). The purpose is to invite suppliers into a bidding process instead of open tender to avoid having people who are not capable of carrying out the work.
He advised the department to make sure the county has active cooperatives which can supply produce in large quantities for better pay, adding that agriculture department needs to interlink to make farming a good venture for farmers in the county.
Maketso said whenever Mulwanda ginnery is mentioned a lot of criticisms and debates are elicited from county residents, adding that everything must be put right.
The chief officer in the department Nelson Kwamini said they need to look at all agricultural produce especially the value addition like cotton, rice, palm oil and cassava which very many people have toiled hard to earn a better living but instead the middle men buy off the produce cheaply, thus leaving the farmers poor.
