Busia resident seeks permanent solution to power outages in the county

A Busia resident Engineer Walter Opondo is seeking partnership with Busia County Government to help address the widespread power outages which has impacted negatively on the socio-economic development of the County.

Speaking  after paying a courtesy call to the County Chief Officer for Energy Eng. Gilbert Oduory in his office on Tuesday,  Eng Opondo  from Kenya Electricity Generating Company  said the only way to  end the constant power blackouts  is  to put up a plant in the county to generate own electricity.

” There are investors who are willing to partner with the County Government  to put up  a plant  that can generate  up to 25 megawatts of electricity  from  waste and  bagasse (sugarcane by products).

Power outages in Busia is not conducive to investors.  We need reliable power supply to spur industrial growth and improve the livelihood  of county residents,” he said.

Eng Opondo  said power supply to Busia comes from  Sondu Miriu . The long  distance  causes transmission loss, thus the need for  own  power which will also be sold to residents at cheaper rates.

Eng Oduory  said  Busia needs 12-15 megawatts. ” If the proposed plant is constructed  the extra 10 or so megawatts  can be used   in industries,” he said.

He said  as a mechanical engineer, Opondo will  be an asset in finding  a lasting solution to power challenges in the county especially in water points and hospitals.

” Using waste from  the two sugar factories of Olepito and Busia Sugar Industry is  a brilliant idea. This will keep our county clean,” he said.

Eng Oduory was flanked by  Acting Director Energy Mcvivian  Anyang and County Electrical Engineer  Kevin Otwani.
