Busia to host second LREB Summit tomorrow

Busia  County will host  the second Lake Region  Economic Bloc at Hotel Itoya  tomorrow (Friday)  will all the 14 Governors  of the member  counties  expected to attend.

Kakamega  County hosted the first Summit on March 26th, 2018 which endorsed  the host Governor  Wycliffe Oparanya as the first chairman with Bomet  Governor  Joyce Laboso elected  vice chair.

LREB Communication Director  Vera  Atieno  revealed on Thursday that  the aim of the Summit   is to institutionalize  and operationalize the Bloc whose  vision is  to be a world  class Bloc in promotion of sustainable , equitable  socio-Economic  development  for a better life.

The summit is the highest  organ  of the Bloc. Top on the agenda will be discussions  on the LREB  Bank project. Another agenda  will be the LREB investment conference  that will be hosted by Bomet County in  October, 2018.

 The Governors will  discuss  on the LREB  Legislative  sensitization program  on the ratification  of the LREB Bill  which seeks  to give the LREB  legal and institutional framework  within which to operate .

The County bosses will also meet  development partners  who  have  been invited  to the summit  meeting as a way  of resource mobilization  for the Blocs activities.

Atieno  said LREB’s  intervention areas  are divided into three. 1. Productive sectors: Agriculture, Tourism, Trade and  Industrialization. 2. Social sectors: Education, Health, Gender, PWDs, water, environment and climate change. 3. Enablers: ICT, Financial Services and  Infrastructure.

Busia  was picked  as  the  chair of  the Agriculture pillar and Nyamira as vice chair   because of its role  of championing Agriculture  in the country.

Busia County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and  Animal Resources  said Busia  is the first county to set up Agribusiness Development  Centre, the first  to start Agriculture Development Fund where farmers access  cheap loans.

”  We are also the leading in  cage fish farming  and  local food production  including  cassava, sorghum , millet and  finger millet among others.   We  have also invested  in Agribusiness  through USAID program  under Kenya  USAID-KAVES,” he said.

On Thursday, LREB  met the Members of Busia County to sensitize them   on the bloc’s Blue Print and Agreement plus LREB ratification bill.
