Busia County Education Support Scheme Board has (CESSB) approved allocation of Sh64million bursaries to the 2016/2017 applicant meaning that the controller of budgets will now disburse the funds to the 12,930 beneficiaries.
Briefing the press after the long awaited meeting of board members at Hotel Levantes Amagoro on Wednesday, Busia County Assembly Education Committee chair Novena Ndaliro said that members of the CSSB had unanimously approved the names of all applicants received from ward committees across the county.
“Today is a happy day because we have started seeing light in the subject of bursary applications and disbursement of funds to secondary, college and university students for the 2016/2017 FY,” she said.
Flanked by Chief Officers Daniel Mogoria and Lydia Nabwire, Ndaliro said the delay to release the funds was caused by the lengthy process involved in making regulations to control disbursement of bursaries.
It is a requirement by law that every county must have a well constituted board and regulations that controls matters county bursaries before any disbursement is effected.
However, Busia County didn’t have one until September 15, 2018 when Governor Sospeter Ojaamong appointed the nine-member committee.
Disbursement of these funds will be a relief to many parents and guardians of the applicants, and it will enable students who documents have been withheld by their respective schools to receive them.
