Busia Women Representative Florence Mutua has promised to support Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in promoting the growth of BT Cotton to spur economic growth.
Addressing parents and guardians during the release of bursary cheques worth Sh2.3m to over 200 students on Thursday, Mutua said she will hold a meeting with farmers starting next week to sensitize them on the need to plant BT cotton which she said is pests resistant.
“As I launch the campaign to sensitize farmers, I want our Governor to push for the revival of cotton ginneries to enable the unemployed youth get employment, “she said.
The Governor revealed when he returned from India in September that the farmers will benefit from new cotton breed from India that will help revive the industry.
He said the new cotton breed produces 70 balls per stem compared to 12 by the current breed used in Kenya, adding that the National Government will has agreed to avail the new cotton seed variety to farmers.
H.E. Ojaamong said Rift Valley Textile (Rivatex) has agreed to purchase cotton from farmers at favourable rates, adding that the new development will raise the economy of the county.
