Department of Trade, Investment, Industry,  & Co-operatives

Overview

The department has five directorates namely: Trade; Weights and Measures (Industry); Cooperatives; Cooperative Enterprise Development Fund and Investment.

The department facilitates and promotes trade and cooperative development and also ensures fair trade practices. The department exists to promote self-reliance through enhanced business, employment and wealth creation. This is achieved through implementation of programmes targeting: diversification; innovation; value-addition; information sharing; market linkages and trade infrastructure support.

Achievements

Trade, markets and Industrialization

  1. The Directorate of Trade has formulated and is implementing two Trade related Acts; The Busia County Trade Revolving Fund Act 2016 and The Busia Trade Act 2017.
  2. The Directorate has offered consultancy and extension services to over 1000 small scale traders countywide.
  3. The Directorate has come up with a Facebook/twitter account on which information on markets and investment opportunities is shared.
  4. Through the provision of Trade Licenses, the Directorate has been able to gather trade related information which enables better planning and subsequent advice to relevant authorities.
  5. The Directorate in collaboration with other stakeholders has held 6 cross border traders trainings and seminars.
  6. The Trade Act 2017 has created an opportunity for formation of the County public/private sector forum in which all relevant private institutions, NGOs and Government agencies are members.
  7. Through construction of markets and market sheds the directorate has created a conducive environment for small and medium scale traders to operate in thus creating employment opportunities.
  8. In collaboration with other relevant private institutions, NGOs and Government agencies the directorate has been able to identify several exportable products in a view to expand the county export base.
  9. The directorate has identified new revenue streams which would increase the amount of revenue generated in the County.
