Journalism student wins Miss Tourism Busia title

Technical University  of Mombasa  Fourth year Journalism and Mass Communication Student  Ann  Paula Machio  is the new  Miss  Tourism Busia champion.

Machio, 21,  from Butula Sub County overcame a spirited challenge from  13 other participants to  lift the title  during the County finals  held at  Chefwest Hotel in Busia Town on Saturday night.

Jackline  Akinyi from Matayos Sub  County   emerged the  first runners  up  with  Maseno  University  First Year Business Administration student Vanne Tess Ajiambo from Teso South  taking the Second  runners up position.

Busia  Governor  Sospeter  Ojaamong   who was the  Chief  Guest  presented  Machio with  the top award of Sh75,000. Akinyi was awarded  Sh50,000 and Tess  Sh35,000. Machio takes over from Leah Otysula who finished sixth overall nationally.

” It was  a pleasant surprise  to  win the top prize considering  the quality of participants. I  attribute it to my mother , an Education Officer in Budalang’i, who has always supported me, Machio said.

 Renown judges Ian Mbugua and  Robert Burale of  the Tusker Project Fame   and Miss Tourism Kenya  Wendy Bella  were on the bench to pick Busia’s best . The participants  went through professional, casual, traditional, creative and dinner wear categories.

Questions and answers time tested the participants  intelligent quotient. Machio was asked  how she would tackle  the bad vice of  corruption if she was the President of Kenya.

” I will ensure such leaders  were arraigned before court  and jailed  if they were found culpable in order  to serve as an example to others who might attempt to engage in the vice,” she said.

In the special category, Machio also won the  most  talented pageant  award . Lynda Opemi  took the most creative award. They each received a Smartphone from Safaricom.    

Others who  witnessed  the thrilling  finals  included  Portugal  Ambassador  Luisa Fragoso, CAS Foreign Affairs Ababu Namwamba,  Deputy Governor  Moses Mulomi, First Ladies Judy Onamu (Busia),  Lydia Khaemba (Trans Nzoia) and county officials.
