Judy Ojaamong cautions farmers against trading on free inputs

Busia First Lady Judy Ojaamong has cautioned farmers against  trading  on  farm inputs  donated  by the  County Government but to use them for intended purpose.Speaking while distributing  farm inputs to over 300 farmers of Bunyala N orth Ward at Mudembi on Thursday,  Judy said  selling  or consuming free seeds will lead to hunger.

” We want to empower women  by availing free farm inputs  so that they can produce more food. This will   end hunger in the County,” she said.Mrs. Ojaamong  distributed 108 packets of  drought resistant maize seeds, 36 packets of sorghum, 108 packets of  green grams and 230 packets of  cow peas.Chief Officer for Agriculture  Richard Achiambo  said  the County Government will roll out the distribution of  free farm inputs soon where over 10,000 farmers are set to benefit across the County.He said  farmers in Bunyala  North and South  have already benefited from  the County Government’s gesture of supplying free inputs ahead of the planting season.Earlier, Bunyala North  Ward extension officer George Ogare  warned  farmers against use of excess pesticides which may result in  destruction of crops.Speaking during a training session  for farmers on modern  farming methods,  Ogare said most farmers till their land once which results in low yields  owing  exhaustion  of soil.He appealed to the County Government to  increase the number of tractors to at least 35 enable each ward  receive one.    A farmer Angeline Geri  thanked the County Government for the free farm inputs, adding that the lessons learnt will enable her increase food production this season.
