A new   team sport Lacrosse, which could herald a new dawn in Kenya has started gaining inroads in Western Kenya  with prospects that it could soon be introduced in  the Kenya Secondary Schools  of events Schools Association Games calendar of events..

The new game which could capture the attention of  many youth who  were undecided on which discipline to join,  has been featuring in this year’s Kenya Secondary School Games Western Region in Mumias, albeit on exhibition basis.

The schools which came to showcase the new sport include Moi  High School  Nangili,  Shibale, Mukumu and Bishop Sulumeti Kakamega. Nangili coach Joseph Okello said the game was introduced in these schools by a former  player and coach in Wales United Kingdom, Storm Trethum.

Okello said  the game will be introduced in the KSSSA calendar of events in 2019 in order to pick a team  to represent Kenya  in  the  World Lacrosse  championships in Canada in August 2019.

He said  Storm introduced the game especially in Mumias East, adding that   as the son of Busia County  he  will endeavor to have it introduced in interested schools probably at  Lwanya Girls and Our Lady of  Mercy.

” The game among girls is simple.  The equipment is free  from our sponsor Ms Storm. It involves a lacrosse stick and a rubber  ball. Players don’t need  any protection. Only goalkeepers wear protective gear.

The game is played  with 12 players on either side or seven aside.  It is very interesting. The goal is six by six feet  with the player  netting a goal if he gets an opportunity,” he said.

Busia County Executive Committee Member for  Sports  Bernard Yaite interacted  with players from Nangili where he  tried the sport.

He  said  the game will get the nod of schools  in Busia County  when it is introduced.” I will take the initiative to ensure that  the sport is embraced in the county.

According to Wikipedia, Lacrosse (disambiguation), is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. Players use the head  of the lacrosse  stick to carry, catch and shoot the ball into the goal.

The sport is governed by the  Federation of International Lacrosse with Unite  States as the sport’s home of origin..

It has  four versions that have different sticks, fields, rules and equipment:  field lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosses’.

The men’s games, field lacrosse (outdoor) and box lacrosse (indoor), are contact sports and all players wear protective gear: helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads.

The women’s game does not allow body contact but does allow stick to stick contact. The only protective gear required for women players is eye gear, while goalkeepers wear helmets and protective pads.  Intercrosse is a mixed-gender non-contact sport that uses an all-plastic stick and a softer ball.
