LREB Governors underscore the need to support the bloc to rescue small counties

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and his Busia counterpart  Sospeter Ojaamong have underscored the need to support the  14-member Lake Region Economic  Block to save  their colleagues from  small counties becoming one term governors.

Speaking during the  Pre-Summit meeting at Hotel Breeze  in Busia town on Thursday evening,   the Governors   said  the bloc  will  achieve  its objectives if  the Governors,  County Secretaries  and  County Executive Committee members move together as a team..

Oparanya  said counties like Vihiga under Wilber Ottichilo,  who was present ,  receives only  Sh4b with Sh3b going to salaries. ” Unless we come and support   counties like Vihiga then we shall have one term governors in such counties. Residents will not realize  the benefits of devolution  and the dynamics involved,” he said.

He said  Busia  like other  counties   have things  they have done better  and which other member counties within LREB wants to emulate. We need to honour meetings to the later to realize the dreams of the bloc.

Kisumu director  of Protocol  Bob  Moanje   told  LREB member counties  to emulate  Busia county by starting their own  live bands in the near future.

Busia Governor  said  the bloc needs  economic gains on the people not  selfish gains, adding that  Busia  has suffered  economic down turn  with most businesses shifting to Uganda due to favourable taxation rates in Uganda.

” The formation of the bloc which was the brainchild of four governors from Western  region  is meant to have President Uhuru Kenyatta listen to them as a bloc.

The only way to  boost the socio-economic  development of the region was to  come together  and not to hide under tribal unity  which will  not achieve any desired goals,” he said,.

Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi  said the formation of the regional bloc  will help spur development through value addition  and increase  in economies of scale.

Busia  Assembly speaker Bernard  Wamalwa pledged   to support the  bloc’s Blue Print and Agreement plus LREB ratification bill when it comes to the floor of the assembly.
