Over 30 women aspirants from Busia County have arrived in Busia for a three-day workshop sponsored by the National Democratic Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
NDI wants to empower Busia women to enable majority of them participate in next year’s General elections and emerge winners to meet the one third threshold.
Among the aspirants in attendance include Mildred Makhanu Etete who has entered the race for Malaba South Ward currently held by Philip Mudai.
Other aspirants includes Regina Omonge who wants to unseat Tony Onyango (Burumba Ward), Grace Omasete who is challenging Deputy Speaker Moses Ote (Angurai South MCA ) and Margaret Aluku who is gunning to unseat Gardy Jakaa as Bukhayo North/Walatsi MCA.
In 2013 polls only one woman , Florence Kunguru ( Bukhayo West Ward) won the MCA seat out of 35 wards in the county.
This prompted Busia County Government to nominate 16 women to meet the one third threshold.
