County Fire engine contains West Kenya Sugar fire in record time
Busia County Government’s the new state-of-the-art fire engine confirmed its presence when it managed to contain fire at West Kenya Sugar factory at Olepito in a record time.
Fire started at one of the crashing machines at around 8pm on Wednesday. The company Human Resource Manager, Dickens Okoth said the County engine arrived in a record 20 minutes after fire outbreak.
The officers fought with the inferno and managed to contain it before it could spread to other buildings.
I salute the County Government for purchasing the engine. It is very effective with the officers also proving that they are up to task,” he said.
Although the management says the cause of the fire is not known , sources said the fire could have been caused by overheating of the crushing machine .
Others say it could have been caused by an electric fault. ” Electricity had disappeared for about three minutes before it returned with a surge.”
Chief Officer in the Governor Sospeter Ojaamong’s office Ezekiel Okwach who is in charge of Disaster management docket said they responded for the distress call within minutes of getting a phone call from the factory management.
” We are happy that the new machine can contain raging fires within reasonable time. The officers who carried the operation did a commendable job. I thank them for the speed they took to respond to the distress call.
Okwach assured county residents that the County Government had put elaborate measures to contain fire outbreaks after purchasing a modern fire engine worth Sh55m.
The engine is fully equipped with modern equipment and accessories from Ziegler Company in Germany. It has a capacity of 9,000 litres of water and 1,000L of form.
The engine has all fire fighting accessories including floodlights and other lights. It can throw 4,000 litres of water per minute.
