"Gateway to East and Central Africa"

Four thousand farmers in Busia County have benefited from European Union funding through Self Help Africa (SHA) to promote cassava production in the county.

Speaking when the team paid a courtesy call to Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in his office on Tuesday, the project Head of program Siyengo said EU has injected Sh650 million in the project that covers six counties including Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori and Kilifi.

 

Siyengo said the three year program is supporting seed mechanization and value addition among others, adding that they have trained about 60 extension officers and equipped them with program Apps and tablets.

The Governor thanked the European Union for the revival of commercial cassava production which will boost the county's economy, urging SHA to avail the right variety that will go along way in boosting production.

He said apart from promoting Cassava production in the County, the EU has injected funds towards afforesation aimed at improving forest cover in the county.

Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said cassava was a major source of income, noting that with the revival of the crop, the economy of the county will improve.
