Kenya and Uganda have endorsed the multi-billion Angololo Trans Boundary Water Resources Development Project that will be shared between the residents of the two countries.

Busia Governor, HE Sospeter Ojaamong represented the Government of Kenya in the Inception Report Review and Validation Workshop at the Drimz Hotel while Uganda Government was represented by Tororo South Member of Parliament, Hon Fredrick Angura in the event which was also attended by Senior Officers in the Ugandan Government.

“Both the County and National Governments are in agreement that the project must proceed; it’s part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s flagship projects and Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa visited the site when he was the Water CS,” he said.

Addressing participants when he formally closed the workshop, the Governor said that over 3,300 hectares is required for the project in both Kenya and Uganda, thus the need for leaders from both countries to sensitize affected residents to accept compensation to allow the project to proceed, noting that the project will be beneficial to the people.

Tororo South MP, Fredrick Angura regretted that the consultant Belta Studio had taken too long, urging it to fast-track the project to enable residents of Angololo, Mela sub county, Tororo District in Uganda, and Osajai, Moding and Kamuriai locations in Kenya to reap from the projects that includes irrigation, electricity and water among others.

Consultant, Daniel Folta of Folta Engineering, USA said the proposed dam will be 22m high, and will have storage capacity of 13million cubic metres with irrigation area of 2,505 hectares and potential 103 KW of hydropower.

Uganda and Kenya Governments, through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), received a grant financing from the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility Special Fund (NEPAD-IPPF Special Fund) which is managed by the African Development Bank to finance the preparation of Angololo Water Resources Project for Implementation.

“We shall propose a bi formula to compensate the families to be affected, noting that the location of the dam is not yet confirmed, adding that they are ready to sensitize communities affected by the project.
