The road to better garbage collection within Busia Municipality is now on course with the delivery of one of the two tractors purchased by the World Bank through the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP).

Acting County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Mr John Mwami said each tractor will have self-skip loader for easier collection of solid waste.

He further disclosed the department has procured seven skip bins that will be stationed at strategic collection stations.

“A six-member committee chaired by Director for Environment and Natural Resources Mr Dan Opilio has been formed to identify appropriate sites where the skip bins will be located for easier collection,” he said.

Speaking after receiving the tractor at the County Government headquarters on Monday, Mr Mwami added that the process of improving sanitation within the Municipality will now start in earnest, assuring residents that the capital intensive process of removing garbage will now be in use compared to labour intensive.

“The old system of collecting garbage was labour intensive and filling one lorry could take a whole day; the tractors with self-skip loaders will take short time to collect garbage to the dumping site at Alupe, with possibilities of collecting garbage twice a day,” he said.

A part from garbage collection, the executive said the department is currently upgrading the Assembly-Milimani Loop-Chiefs Office access Road, Floman Lane and Magharibi access Roads and installation of one Monopole High Mast Flood Light.

He added that the department was preparing a Strategic Plan and Development of Busia Municipality which is at cabinet level, noting that the move will lead to construction of modern kiosks.

Mr Mwami added that plans to develop Malaba Municipality was also on course with the process of constituting a new board of management.

"I urge those interested for management roles in the board to submit their applications through the County Public Service Board,"
