Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has commissioned a sh15 million Oxygen Manufacturing Plant at the Busia County Referral Hospital (BCRH).

Addressing journalists, Ojaamong said the plant is the biggest in western region, noting that it will supply gas to wards, theatre, maternity and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Accident and Emergency block.

“The Oxygen Plant is the biggest in Western region and it will be essential in the supply of gas to the facility,” said the Governor, adding that there will be adequate supply of oxygen which will be a big step for the County.

H.E Ojaamong who was flanked by the Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi and the Chief Officer Health and Sanitation Dr Isaac Omeri, stressed that the plant will ease the financial burden to patients with critical conditions in need of oxygen.

The plant will cut down on the cost of purchasing oxygen from companies that have been supplying the facility with oxygen. BCRH spends about 40 cylinders of oxygen, an equivalent of sh240, 000 monthly.

The County Chief however regretted that health care workers were on strike, stating that his administration has explained to striking health workers the real situation and the need to return to work.

He continued: “We shall resort to God to take care of everybody considering that the strike might take long. For the workers who are willing to resume duty we shall always talk because nobody is prepared to risk his life,”

He further appealed to the multi-agency team handling the current crisis at the National Government to look for a lasting solution to the persistent strikes that have continued to disrupt health care services.

“My Government has done its part based on the available finances,” said the Governor who emphasized that other things are beyond the County's control.

Also present was the Busia Medical Superintendent Dr Namdala Emukule among others.
